To ensure your cigars stay in great smoking shape for weeks and months, it's essential that you have a reliable cigar humidor to store them in. Cigars can easily dry out if left out in an open environment , even though they still have their airtight seals. An average cigar leaves the hands of the cigar roller with around 15% of moisture left in the tobacco leaves. The key is to keep this moisture in for a perfect smoke. It's even been advised that cigars should be kept in humidors a few months after purchase, as to allow gas buildup in the cigar to release. This is personal preference of course, and here at fat Jake's cigars, we haven't ever noticed a difference.
You want a humidor that allows your cigars to breathe. This means the seal should not be airtight, but should allow some air flow. Never ever store your new cigars in a humidor that has not been properly seasoned. The wood in a new humidor can suck the moisture right out of your precious cigars, leaving you with dry tinder sticks to smoke. And no one wants that! To properly season your new humidor, place a charged humidification system inside the humidor. The system can be as simple as a small dish with distilled water in it, or a humidifier with distilled water added. You'll want a measurement of approximately 65 to 70° humidity inside the humidifier before placing your cigars inside. A hygrometer is used to measure humidity. We recommend taking a minimum of seven days, and preferably longer, to properly humidify your humidor. Trust us, the wait will be worth it! You'll be smoking your fine cigars in no time at all.
